Serpent's Mark is Tikal's PvP system — a set of skull marks, combat rules, and death penalties that govern player-vs-player combat. PvP becomes available at level 20. Below that level you can neither attack nor be attacked by another player.
Every character wears one of three visible marks (or none at all), shown above their name:
| Mark | Who sees it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| (none) | Everyone | Innocent. Attacking them earns you a white skull. |
| White skull | Everyone | Aggressor. You attacked an innocent player first. |
| Yellow skull | Only you | That player is actively attacking you right now. You may retaliate freely — no white skull, no frags. |
| Red skull | Everyone | Serial killer. Killed 3 or more innocents in the past 24 hours. |
You earn a white skull the moment you land an unprovoked hit on an innocent (no-skull) player who is not already attacking you.
Kill 3 or more innocent players (unjustified kills / "frags") within a 24-hour rolling window to earn a red skull that lasts 24 hours.
A kill is justified (no frag) when the victim either carried a white or red skull themselves, or had landed a hit on you in this life. After they die without a frag they are innocent again: killing them on the new life is unjustified. Locking you as a target without connecting a blow does not count.
Red-skull players can be attacked with a single tap, just like a monster — no double-tap, no confirmation prompt.
Not a global mark. Only you see a yellow skull over a player who has landed a hit on you and still has no white or red skull of their own. It is your signal that the fight is mutual and retaliation is safe. It drops when they die or log out — locking you as a target without connecting a blow does not count.
Level protection: an unprovoked attack on an innocent whose level is below your level × 0.67 is blocked entirely. At level 100 you cannot open on anyone below level 67. This only applies to the first strike on an innocent; it never blocks retaliation, and it never protects players who are already skulled or attacking you.
If a much lower-level player opens on you, they do not keep the same-level damage sponge. Hits on a victim below your level × 0.67 deal full damage, and that drinker's mana potions are trimmed while the fight is live (see Combat mechanics). Close-level duels stay at 50%. Classic Tibia (TFS) has no level-gap factor — every PvP hit is 50%. Tikal's same-bracket factor is 50%; the lift is only for that gap.
Safe zones: the town shrine and surrounding area (within 6 tiles of every temple/respawn shrine) is absolute sanctuary — no PvP, no monsters. The safe disc is the same for everyone, skulled or not.
Temple exit grace: stepping out of a sanctuary grants 5 seconds of protection. Any player who camps the exit to ambush fresh arrivals cannot hit you in that window. You lose the grace immediately if you open aggression.
A character carrying a white or red skull may not voluntarily walk into the 6-tile shrine radius, even out of combat. This prevents marked PKs from camping the respawn point to kill players as they wake from death.
On a Full PvP world there are no skulls, so this shrine ban does not apply by mark. Instead, anyone in an active player fight (about 10 seconds after the last player blow) cannot walk into the shrine disc or take the travel guide into sanctuary. Hitting someone and sprinting to the depot is not an escape. Mainland skull-worlds are unchanged: an innocent defender can still reach a shrine; a white or red skull cannot.
| Situation | What drops |
|---|---|
| PvE death (monsters) | Bag contents drop; up to 1 worn item |
| PvP death (white skull or innocent) | Bag contents drop; up to 1 worn item |
| PvP death (red skull) | Everything — full bag AND all worn equipment |
Jade Reclaim: only the victim, the killer, and the victim's party allies may open a fallen player's corpse. Strangers cannot grief-loot your body.
A new life is clean. Dying drops a white skull that came only from attacking (you never killed anyone). The person you attacked can no longer hunt you skull-free. If they kill you again while you are unmarked and not hitting them, they take the white skull.
Skulled players can still use NPC captains and travel ships — but the fare is higher:
| Account type | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Free | 5× the normal city-hop price |
| Premium | 3× the normal price (Patrons travel free when clean — not while skulled) |
City Teleport Scrolls and Return to House Scrolls are blocked while you carry a skull. You cannot teleport-escape a fight via items — walk to the docks or wait for the skull to clear.
A fight is not a teleport. Walking onto a teleport portal (the glowing pads that warp you across the island or to another world) does nothing while you are in battle — on every map. Wait for the in-combat indicator to fade, then step on. Stairs and holes still work.
City Teleport Scrolls and Return to House Scrolls were already refused mid-fight. On a Full PvP world you also cannot walk into a temple sanctuary or take the travel guide until the fight mark fades.
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Damage dealt to players (same band) | 50% of normal (e.g. a 100-damage hit lands as 50) |
| Damage vs a much lower-level player | 100% — victim below attacker × 0.67 (same band as the newbie shield) |
| Hitting up (you are the lower level) | Still 50% |
| Self-heals and ally heals while PvP-marked | 50% of normal |
| Health potions while PvP-marked | 50% of the pour |
| Mana potions while PvP-marked | 100%, or 50% if you are in the underleveled band vs your foe |
| Potion exhaust while in player combat | 1 second (vs 0.5s while hunting monsters) |
| Magic Shield mana absorption vs players | 1:1 (same as PvE). Recast is a flat 100 mana — see Vocation Balance |
| Spell group cooldowns | Apply in full (~2 seconds between attack spells) — no relaxed PvE soft-tempo |
The 50% same-bracket damage factor and 50% heal factor together are the classic Tibia sponge: one formula for hunts and player fights, then half. Extra vocation-only PvP trims were removed on 2026-09-15. The cross-bracket lift exists so a 75 who opens on a 220 (or a 70 mage vs a 205 knight) cannot hide behind that sponge plus a full mana-potion Magic Shield. See Vocation Balance for the full simulation data.
Hits, shields, and reflects print in the System combat log on your client (damage you dealt, damage you took, mana lost to Magic Shield, Obsidian Retaliation). Classic Tibia (TFS) is the same idea: per-hit numbers live on the client; the database stores deaths, not every swing. Tikal records deaths on your character. If nobody dies, there is no death record to look up.
For a fight with none of the skull or death-penalty risk above, look for a Battle Arena — a walled Sparring Pit marked on the minimap with crossed blades. Its gates are permanently sealed stone doors: you cannot walk in. A Battle Arena has one gate per wall (four total); a Grand Arena has three per wall (twelve total). Talk to the Arena Keeper standing just outside and say the word (arena, duel, spar, fight, battle, or pit) to join the queue.
Anyone waiting can start the bout. The Keeper's window shows how many fighters this pit holds (waiting / capacity):
| Pit | Size | Fighters |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Arena | 11×11 | 4 |
| Grand Arena | 19×19 | 12 (triple the floor, triple the roster) |
| Tiny duel pit | 7×7 | 2 |
| Huge custom pit | up to 60×60 | 24 (the cap) |
Other sizes scale with the footprint. If the queue is full, wait for the next bout — overflow stays queued.
When the bout starts, every selected fighter is teleported inside, fresh rubble and broken columns scatter for cover, and the match is a small group or free-for-all — not just a 1v1. Kills inside are always justified (no skull, no frag). Dying costs nothing: no experience or skill loss, no corpse, no loot. You wake just outside the nearest gate. A Leave arena button stays on screen for the whole fight.
Some islands are Full PvP. They are open hunting grounds for player combat: the skull system is off, but dying still costs you.
The current demo Full PvP island is Balam (Demo) — recommended hunting level 50–150. Temples stay sanctuary; everywhere else, player combat is allowed without skulls. The layout and hunts may still change while it is in demo.
| Battle Arena | Full PvP world | Normal world | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skull / frags | None | None | Serpent's Mark as above |
| Loot & equipment on death | Kept | Dropped (bag + up to 1 worn item — never the red-skull wipe) | Dropped |
| Experience & skill loss | None | Yes | Yes |
| Attack confirm | Not needed | Not needed (single tap) | Confirm before you mark yourself |
| Temples | — | Still sanctuary — cannot enter while a player fight is live | Sanctuary (skulled players cannot enter even out of combat) |
A white or red skull you earned on another island is hidden while you stand on a Full PvP world — it does not apply here (no skull shrine ban, no travel surcharge). Dying here does not wash that mark; it comes back when you leave. The fight shrine lock above still applies.
Teleport portals and the travel guide will not carry you out of an active fight on these islands. While that fight mark is live you also cannot walk into the shrine disc — the depot is not a reset button.
Declared guild wars bypass skull rules for the two guilds involved — attacking a member of the enemy guild earns no white skull, and their deaths grant no frags. See the Guild window for declaration and acceptance rules.
